Social Distancing 101

We Love Certainty

Generally as Human beings ..... we like certainty.  We are hard-wired to want to know what & when happening and to notice things that feel threatening to us. Think fight or flight mechanism. For those familiar with the The Polyvagal Theory - you will be aware of the books strap line "The Transformative Power Of Feeling Safe". Certainty makes us feel safe.

Uncertainty Makes Us Feel Unsafe

When things become uncertain this can make us feel really unsafe, causing us to get stressed out. This very reaction, although in place there to protect us, can land us in all sorts of bother when there is a sense of uncertainty and mayhem around us.

Our Anxiety Levels Increase

When we feel we have no control over things going on in our lives  - this raises  our anxiety levels. So its no surprise with things the way they are at the moment.

So what happens when things are unsafe? Many of us are worried about COVID-19, known as the “Coronavirus”.  We may feel helpless about what will happen or what we can do to play our part.  The uncertainty might also connect to our uncertainty about other aspects of our lives, or remind us of past trauma when we didn’t feel safe and when our immediate future felt frightening or uncertain.

So what effect does it have on us?

In times like these, our mental health can suffer.  We aren't always aware.  You might feel more negative, annoyed, angry, helpless or sad.  You might notice that you are more frustrated with others or want to completely avoid any reminders of what is happening.  For those who already struggle with our mental wellness, we might feel even more anxious or depressed or less motivated to carry out our daily activities.

What Can We do?

It’s important to become aware that although we may feel helpless - we can always choose and control our own response.  If you are finding things a struggle, here are 5 top things you can do to take care of your mental health in the face of the current climate.
